Catapult's Misfire

No, but - Labor

Keywords - Upright: a miss with information, range found the hard way  ·  Inverted: the fluke shot, the wrong target proving right

Upright

The mechanism failed but something useful landed in the chaos anyway. Perhaps not where intended. Perhaps better.

The mechanism failed and the shot went wrong - no breach, no hit, the target standing exactly as before. But a launched thing lands somewhere, and where it lands teaches: the range is bracketed now, the flaw in the rig is found, the ground it tore up shows something the survey missed. A miss that instructs is still a miss. The instruction is the consolation, not the victory.

Inverted

Once in a great while the error outperforms the aim. The skewed shot finds what nobody was aiming at - and what nobody was aiming at turns out to matter. Take the gift without trusting it; flukes are not a technique. Exploit what the accident exposed before the defenders understand their own wall.

In Play

Upright. Sera's ballista jams and the bolt skews into the gatehouse wall - the gate holds, but the cracked facing maps exactly where the old repair is weakest.

Inverted. The skewed bolt punches through a bricked-up arrow slit into the munitions stored behind it - she missed the gate, and the wall came down anyway.
