Upright

The performance failed and the room turned. The heckler has the crowd now. Social no/and at its most pointed.

The performance died, and it had help. Someone in that room wanted it dead - timed the jeer, led the laughter, made your failure the night's entertainment - and the crowd went with them. Public failure is survivable. Public failure with an author walks out of the room ahead of you and tells the story first. Tonight the heckler owns the stage, and stages remember their owners.

Inverted

Mobs have no brakes, and the heckler's triumph does not know where to stop. The mockery runs past funny into ugly; the room that laughed begins to shift in its seats; and somewhere in the crowd, disgust stands up. Cruelty that overplays its hand deals all its sympathy to its victim. The room is turning again - catch it mid-turn.

In Play

Upright. The wit in the third row times his line into Pell's pause, and the room's laughter buries her next verse and the two after it.

Inverted. He keeps going - past her set's end, at her retreating back - until the laughter thins and a quarry foreman stands up and tells him, into the new silence, to have a care.
