It worked - the audience, the teacher, the room all say so - and the praise comes stapled to a syllabus. Genuine attention from someone who knows the craft is worth more than applause, and costs more too: expectations, corrections, the assumption that you now intend to be excellent. The compliment is the assignment.

Inverted

The mentor's approval has quietly become the performance's purpose, and that is a trade you never agreed to. The notes never end; the bar climbs with every clearance; the repertoire narrows to what pleases one chair in the room. Whether to play for the room or for the chair - and what refusing the chair will cost - is a question worth its own card.
