Upright

The mechanism failed but the parts are recoverable. Something useful remains from the wreckage. Practical hope.

It does not work. Not needs-adjustment - dead, and the hours in it are spent. Salvage is the discipline that begins now: the gears survive, the frame is true, the costly parts unseat cleanly. A failed build that yields its parts has returned most of its price. The design was the loss. The inventory is the consolation.

Inverted

Taken apart, the failure explains itself. The cracked casting, the tolerance that drifted, the joint that was always going to walk - the wreck is a better teacher than the working model would have been, because it shows exactly where the lie lived. The next build starts from knowledge the first one lacked. Start it.

Upright. The pump seizes past saving; Oskar strips it by lamplight and racks eight good gears and a true shaft against the next attempt.

Inverted. Under the seized housing he finds the culprit - a green casting, poured too fast at the foundry - and now he knows which supplier's stock to test before trusting it.
