Miller's Fire

No, and - Conflict

Keywords - Upright: total loss, livelihood in one blaze  ·  Inverted: the fire's terrible mercy, worse ruin pre-empted

Upright

The mill burned. Flour dust and millstones and the particular horror of grain fires that spread fast and take everything.

Grain-dust burns like temper: all at once. The mill is gone - stones cracked, works charred, the season's flour and the roof that kept it dry in one column of smoke. This is the card of complete material loss, and it has no partial reading: what the fire wanted, the fire took, and what it took was the means of making a living. What remains is the ground, the skill, and whoever stands beside you looking at it.

Inverted

In the ash, an accounting: the fire took everything, including things that were quietly killing you. The tainted grain that would have gone to bread. The beam that was coming down on its own schedule, with people under it. Nobody sane chooses the fire - but the fire has choices of its own, and some of what it chose deserved burning. What to rebuild, and what to leave in the ash - that choice lays the first stone of whatever comes next.

In Play

Upright. The mill takes light at dusk and is a shell by moonrise - the season's flour, the new gearing, and Oskar's custom work, all in one smoke.

Inverted. Raking the ash, Oskar finds the burst grain bins black with ergot - the blaze that ruined him also burned the batch that would have maddened half the parish.
