Upright

Failed, confined, seemingly stuck. And yet someone scratched a way out in the dark. It's there if you look.

The attempt failed and the walls answer any argument about it. What the dark offers instead is small and real: a scratched mark left by an earlier hand, a stone that shifts, a guard whose rounds have a rhythm. None of it is a way out tonight. All of it is a way of not being finished. Hold the thread.

Inverted

The thread has tightened into a plan. Watched long enough, the pattern shows its gap; followed far enough, the scratched marks resolve into a route somebody once completed. What patience assembled is ready to be spent - and spending it, tonight, at the change of watch, is the next draw.

In Play

Upright. Thrn's break fails and buys him a deeper cell - where three nights of listening teach him that the north guard leaves early when it rains.

Inverted. Rain comes, and the north guard leaves early. Whether the old scratches under the sill mean what Thrn thinks they mean is the draw.
