Upright

Something bound and purposeful is working against you, methodically and without malice. But somewhere in the mechanism there's an improvised patch, a jury-rigged solution, a crack in the construct. It won't last. It doesn't need to.

What stands against you is built, bound, and doing its job - no malice in it, no fatigue, no bribe it can hear. Things made with purpose fail differently than people do: not by weakening but at their seams. And this one has a seam - a patch, a jury-rig, a place where its maker was in a hurry. You have not beaten it. You have found where it was never finished.

Inverted

The seam is giving. Pressed, the patched place spreads: the ward flickers on its cycle, the binding slackens at the join, the construct hesitates where its instructions were spliced together. What its maker postponed, you are collecting. Whether the gap opens wide enough - and whether you are standing in the right place when it does - is the next draw.

In Play

Upright. The warded door ignores Tamsin's every key - but along the hinge side she can feel where the binding was re-laid, coarser than the original work.

Inverted. Each dusk the re-laid section dims a half-breath before the rest - and tonight, in that half-breath, the hinge is only iron.
