Design Principles
Compatible with Level One TTRPG and adaptable to other systems, or usable alone.
This oracle uses a standard 54-card deck (52 + 2 Jokers) as a complete interpretive system. Every meaningful element is encoded directly into the card face - no lookup tables required for basic play, though references are provided for convenience. The principles are consistent enough to learn and apply improvisationally, using as much or as little as you like on any given draw.
Three layers of meaning operate simultaneously on every card:
- Color provides binary direction (yes/no)
- Suit provides narrative texture and thematic domain
- Rank provides role/archetype association OR degree when relevant
The player controls interpretive depth by choosing which layers to read. A simple yes/no question reads color only. A full scene prompt reads all three layers together.
The Aperture Principle: The more specific your question, the more limited and specific the answer. The most open and freeform application is not a question at all, but a prompt: "I do this. What happens?" This is a feature, not a bug.
Design note on suit associations: This system uses visually intuitive suit mappings (a club is a weapon, a spade is a digging tool) rather than traditional cartomancy associations. Players comfortable with traditional or Tarot associations may substitute those freely - the system works either way. We did try to keep at least nominally in line with pseudo-traditional applications.
