Upright

Unstoppable, impersonal, and it absolutely made everything worse. The mountain didn't even notice you.

The mountain has moved, and nothing about you is relevant to it. This is calamity at a scale that does not register persons: route, supplies, timetable, all revised by tonnage. There is no reading of this card in which the plan survives intact. What skill governs now is small and immediate - where to stand, what to drop, which way is actually up.

Inverted

What buries you buries everything. The slide that took your trail took the party behind you; the flood that drowned the ford drowned its toll-keepers' records; the catastrophe closed the pass to everyone, and everyone includes what was hunting you. Indifference cuts both ways - the disaster has erased the board, and whoever regroups first gets to redraw it. Regroup first.

In Play

Upright. The slope lets go above the switchbacks; Doral loses the mules, the tents, and the season's route in forty seconds of white.

Inverted. When the snow settles, the pass is closed behind him too - and the bounty men three hours back are going home the long way, if they are going anywhere.
