Upright

You didn't earn this. The ledger says no, the merit says no, and yet here is a pass, slightly corrupt and entirely functional. Don't examine it too closely. Walk through.

By every rule that applies, the answer is no - and yet here is a gap in the rules, found the way instinct finds things, a half-step ahead of thought. What you get is a reprieve, not a pardon: a season's delay, a look aside, a technicality with your name on it. The no still exists. You just do not face it today, and today was the emergency.

Inverted

The gap holds further than gaps should. The paper nobody ought to honor keeps being honored; the look aside becomes a habit; the borrowed grace outlasts every checkpoint it was never meant to survive. You are through - genuinely through - on merit you do not have. Somewhere a debt of luck is accruing, and the next draw says nothing about when it bills.

In Play

Upright. The friar cannot absolve Renn's temple-debt - but he can misfile the ledger until spring, and spring is a long way off.

Inverted. The misfiled ledger is never found; by summer a new prior has burned the archive's clutter, Renn's page among it, and no one living can name the sum.
